The Vagrant Lovers collective are proud to announce a new series of shows, and collaborations with key members starting this weekend at Curious Arts Festival.
GIL DE RAY, and KIRSTY ALLISON‘s new project with THE CHILDREN OF THE BURNING SUN perform at the Curious Arts festival in the New Forest this weekend in the New River Press tent. GIL DE RAY strips back from the usual backing band, with a totally new set, for a brave and enchanting solo performance. His following solo show is at The Waiting Room in London, headlining on Thursday 23rd August.
Gil’s prolificacy spreads to VOODOOTRON, his new collab with Helsinki-based Parisian, Benjamin Floor Trauma, and DREAM PIRATE, the forthcoming collab with fellow Vagrant Lover, WELFARE. Gil is associate editor on COLD LIPS, and also makes films (usually to accompany his and cohort’s music), writes, and draws and paints.
GIL DE RAY is also the music to KIRSTY ALLISON + THE CHILDREN OF THE BURNING SUN project which continues Kirsty’s explorations in the space between lyricism, spoken word, and poetry which she started at the Sylvia Plath Fan Club nights in London, pioneering the new wave that is returning poetry to the forefront of the arts. Editor and publisher of COLD LIPS, and arts editor of DJ Mag, her confronting and visceral poetry and performance is in the lineage of punk poetry, with comparisons to Jock Scot, Jeremy Reed, and Dr John Cooper Clarke. Murray Lachlan Young describes her as “sexy and talented, what’s not to like?”
On the 18th August, as part of the Liminality 3 exhibition at Sean McLusky and co’s Gallery 46 in Whitechapel, KIRSTY ALLISON + THE CHILDREN OF THE BURNING SUN make their debut London performance. The wider exhibition runs 17th-19th August which celebrates cross-disciplinary works in visual-sound performance. Gil and Kirsty’s collaborative film shot in New Orleans, DOUBLEPLAY, where she chalked up graffiti poems around Crescent Park (premiering in New York earlier this year) will play in Europe for the first time, accompanied by IRON WORDS sculpture inspired by the film, and mixed-media work on stills. There will also be a ltd edition book of poetry of the performance.
Her work has played in the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, and Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Sao Paulo. Her art is usually given away to charity, but has sold internationally. Her debut novel is coming next year on Wrecking Ball Press.
Tickets for Curious can be arranged. info@vagrantlovers.com

VL007 WELFARE: USEFUL TOIL EP
PERFUME by GIL DE RAY 💖VL005
PERFUME by GIL DE RAY
coming: APRIL 20th 2018
“GUITARS ARE BACK!…IT’’S LIKE THE FLAMING GROOVIES MEETS DEVO…WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS…” BBC 6MUSIC’s LAUREN LAVERNE
Following the Gil De Ray and Little Barrie’ Pet Weapons’ release making the daytime playlist with Lauren Laverne’s Recommends on 6Music, and previous 6Music support for Gil De Ray from Gideon Coe – here’s the next drop:
Coming in at 3 minutes 12 seconds, PERFUME by Gil De Ray is like Roxy Music riding into town on balearic horses, all Clash Magnificent Seven after a few lost weeks at the rock n roll disco. There’s a ska bassline to take us into the summer.
“Perfume is about infatuation and addiction. The earthly desires that prompt us and determine our actions. Our weaknesses and triggers that guide our decisions. Perfume is the siren, the clarion, the trigger of every day mind control. There’s no escape! So go with it, indulge yourself. Find what you love and let it kill you…”
Gil De Ray (proving his love of Bukowski, there…)
Gil is joined by DesertShips’ Michael Buckley on guitar (he joined the band after Gil De Ray had supported them, and was blown away with the live set), Dr Paco is on bass, and Jody Moroney on drums.
Cover art features poet/filmmaker & Burberry model Greta Bellamacina and her partner, the word artist and New River Press publisher Robert Montgomery. Inspired by Syd Barrett’s Madcap Laughs, but contemporising the muse, Robert appears naked. The shoot is taken from the forthcoming 4th edition of the COLD LIPS zine, and there will be a launch party for both single and mag, with super special guests. The video for PERFUME is in production, featuring the new Vagrant Lovers’ scent.
GIL DE RAY’s debut album: A RIOT OF SOUND, released in 2016, was Rough Trade’s Album Of The Week and gained plaudits from the music press. Perfume was recorded by the band, and mixed by guitarist and engineer Michael Buckley.

💖PET WEAPONS = GIL DE RAY + LITTLE BARRIE💖
SHIT CITY (radio reverse edit known as DEATH OF THE WEST END) + STARBURGER BLUES (12min. epic) are available from FRIDAY 15th DECEMBER ON ALL PLATFORMS.
PET WEAPONS is the collaboration between GIL DE RAY and LITTLE BARRIE frontman, BARRIE CADOGAN: contemporary guitarist who’s played with Primal Scream, Edwyn Collins, Morrissey, Spiritualized, Charles Bradley, and many more.
Growing from a frantic period of idea-sharing and mutual inspiration, PET WEAPONS was crafted in snatched moments backstage and rehearsal rooms where GIL DE RAY toured the UK, Japan and the West coast of America supporting LITTLE BARRIE’s SHADOW album tour. Sometimes Gil De Ray were support band, sometimes Gil was designated driver, sometimes provider of live psychedelic video projections. GIL filmed and directed the promos for (the Raindance nominated) EYES WERE YOUNG, PAULINE, I5CA, and LOVE OR LOVE from the latest album, DEATH EXPRESS. BARRIE CADOGAN plays guitar and co-produced GIL DE RAY’s debut album: A RIOT OF SOUND, released in 2016, making Rough Trade’s Album Of The Week and gaining plaudits from Q.
Recorded and mixed in the winter of 2016, by Mike Burnham at Lovebuzz Studios in south east London: the sonic home of Fuzz Club Records live sessions, Cadogan’s debut solo EP The Cobra Lamps (released on Anton Newcombe’s A recordings), and Gil De Ray’s Riot Of Sound.

VL003 GIL DE RAY: PENNY SUICIDE
GIL DE RAY release single: PENNY SUICIDE: 27th NOVEMBER
Available on Bandcamp
Hitting hard from the Gideon Coe played INCANTATIONS single last month (VL001), PENNY SUICIDE goes Stooges on the Paradise Papers – politically charged, with a brave and blinding scowl and spit not seen since Johnny Rotten. Fast, glorious – showcasing the Suicide energy of their live performances.
“No-one is saying anything about what is really going on in this country – I am the only one with the balls to say anything in the sterile world of music.” GIL DE RAY
GIL DE RAY are named after Glaswegian-born, South London-based singer, Gil (who in past lives was signed by John Niven on Independiente). He is joined by Mikey Buckley (Desert Ships) on guitar, Jody Moroney on drums, Dr. Paco on bass.
“GIL DE RAY are Johnny Thunders meets old school indie Primal Scream, via the balearics.” COLD LIPS
Their debut album Riot of Sound received Album of the Week at Rough Trade and single of the day on Q, getting play from Don Letts.
GIL DE RAY supported Dr John Cooper Clarke recently and toured in Japan and the US supporting Little Barrie (there’s a single coming up 8th December with Gil, and Barrie Cadogan as Pet Weapons their first release: Shit City).
PENNY SUICIDE was recorded and mixed at Lovebuzz Studios. It’s the second single from a new body of three albums.
